The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Tally is "ugly".  She's waiting in Uglyville for her operation that is supposed to make her "pretty".  When she makes a new friend, that changes the game for her.  Shay, her friend is a lot of fun.  They ride hover-boards and they use morph-technology which shows what they'll look like when they're pretty.  Shay talks all about this mysterious David.  She also wants to run away. She won't become pretty.  That sounds okay, until it interferes with Tally's operation.  Tally can't be pretty unless she finds Shay.  When she finds the location hidden in riddle, she also finds a love interest and forms bonds there.  Suddenly it's at war.  Tally's future is in jeopardy in more ways than one.

I recommend this for people who like dystopian stories and books that might connect to today's world.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

All of North America has been ruined and the country of Panem has risen from the ash.  Panem has been broken down into 13 sections: Districts 1 through 12 and the Capitol.  Every year, the Capitol has a gruesome event where 1 boy and 1 girl between the ages 12 to 18, from each district fight to the death until there is but one person left alive.  Katniss Everdeen is a 17 year-old girl from District 12, the poorest district, who volunteered to take the place of her sister, Prim.  Katniss has a grudge with the boy from her district, Peeta, which quickly escalates into a romance.  Will she survive?  Will she protect Peeta?

Percy Jackson and The Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan

During winter break, Percy, Annabeth and Thalia are summoned by Grover to Westover Hall.  There they meet two demi-gods, Nico and Bianca Di Angelo and a lot of trouble.  Monsters attack and the four demi-gods meet The Hunters of Artemis, a band of girls who can't stand to even look at boys.  Percy will experience heartbreak and learn just how important his friends are to him.  If that's not enough, the prophecy takes a twisted turn as it draws nearer.

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire By J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is fantastic like the rest of the series.  With all that happened at the Quidditch World Cup and the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry and his friends have enough on their plate.  Their new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, Professor Moody, makes things appear to be looking up. But, not everything is as it seems.  What will happen during the Tri-Wizard tournament? Only time can tell.

I recommend this book to Harry Potter fans and readers who like action and mystery.
